Mental Models That Keep You Stuck

When you feel stuck, how do you know what needs to change?

It’s difficult to work that out when some of the ideas guiding your decisions feel so familiar that you don’t notice them anymore. This course helps you recognise those ideas, examine how they affect your situation, and question the ones that may be getting in your way.

It’s difficult to question something you think is simply a fact about you.

“I’m just like this” can feel like the end of the conversation.

But some of what we take for granted about ourselves comes from patterns and assumptions we’ve learned. These are part of our mental models: our internal ideas about how we work and how the world works.

I use a simple “apps” model to make these patterns easier to recognise. From there, we can examine whether a particular pattern is useful in the situation we’re dealing with.

Hi, I’m Gwen.

I have a master’s degree in Applied Neuroscience, and I spent nearly ten years working as a therapist. I developed this model during my work with patients because questioning a belief is much harder when you don’t recognise it as a belief in the first place.

I’ve used it for years to help people begin that conversation. In this course, I’ll explain the model and guide you through exercises to explore your own thinking.

What you’ll learn to do

Recognise what you’re taking for granted

Identify assumptions about yourself and your situation that you may not have thought to question.

Examine what “stuck” means in your situation

Look more closely at how you interpret what’s happening, including what you count as progress and what you dismiss.

Question a belief you’ve been treating as a fact

Practise examining your conclusions and considering alternatives, so you have more to work with when deciding what to do next.

Work through it with your own situation in mind.

You’ll get:

  • Video lessons explaining the model and common thinking patterns, with examples to help you recognise them.
  • Practical exercises to connect what you’re learning to something you’re experiencing.
  • The cognitive-distortions worksheet to identify patterns in your own thinking.
  • Guided questions to help you examine a belief once you’ve noticed it.

You don’t need to know which mental model might apply to you before you start. Learning to recognise it is part of the work.
